About Us
The National Alliance of Black Interpreters (NAOBI) Detroit chapter is a non-profit organization based in Detroit, Michigan. We were chartered in 2003 and became a 501 (c) (3) in 2017; our mission is to “Promote excellence and empowerment among African Americans/Blacks in the profession of sign language interpreting in the context of a multi-cultural/multi-lingual environment.” We offer events that galvanize and enrich the interpreting and deaf communities. Through professional development opportunities, we aim to increase awareness of the experiences of minority sign language interpreters and foster personal and professional growth among all in the vocation. We take pride in being able to serve such a culturally rich community.
NAOBI Detroit has partnered with the CATIE Center to bring you exciting programs that are geared toward certification and training. These programs include, Graduation to Certification, Mental and Behavioral health, Legal, and DeafBlind trainings. The unique thing about this partnership, it has an emphasis of recruiting Black/African American interpreters and inspiring interpreters.
